to welcome urologic surgeon Glenn Zausmer, DO.
Dr. Zausmer received his medical degree from
Des Moines University and completed his residency
at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. He
also served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Medical
Corps for 24 years.
With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Zausmer
brings expertise in care of a wide range of urological conditions,
including kidney stones, renal masses, urinary incontinence and prostate
cancer. He provides a full range of urological care for both pediatric and
adult patients.

OUR KIDNEYS
are responsible for multiple
vital functions. In addition to cleansing
metabolic wastes from our bloodstream—
which are then disposed of with the
urine—they help regulate other body
functions, including blood pressure, the
amount of vital minerals in our system and
the production of new blood cells by our
bone marrow.
Where do kidney stones
come from?
While there are metabolic abnormalities
that can make people susceptible to stone
formation, the majority of kidney stones are
partly the result of inadequate fluid intake.
Stones can be composed of several different
substances; however, most are composed
of calcium and oxalate—two substances
commonly found in urine.
Fortunately the majority of stones will
pass without interventions. There are medi-
cations offered to help reduce the pain and
time of passage. In some cases, intervention
is necessary.
What can I do to prevent
kidney stones?
The single best maneuver to lower your
risk of stone formation is drinking plenty
of fluids to keep your urine diluted. While
volume counts, many beverages can
actually be detrimental. Limiting one’s

intake of coffee, tea, alcohol and colas is
prudent. Good old-fashioned water is an
excellent choice.
