ON JAN. 24,
HealthGrades’
®
10th
annual
Hospital Quality and Clinical
Excellence Study
once again named
Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical
Center a Distinguished Hospital for
Clinical Excellence for the second year
in a row—and Idaho’s most recognized
hospital as a four-time recipient of the
designation. This prestigious distinction places Saint Alphonsus among
the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for clinical performance,
one of 263 out of 5,000 non-federal hospitals nationwide.
Idaho’s only 4-time recipient
Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center is the only hospital
in Idaho to receive this recognition four times since the award
originated in 2003. Saint Alphonsus was named a Distinguished
Hospital for Clinical Excellence in 2003, 2006, 2011 and 2012.
The award is reserved for those hospitals achieving the lowest
risk-adjusted mortality and lower risk-adjusted complication rates
for Medicare patients over a range of 26 of the most common
procedures and diagnoses, from hip replacement to bypass surgery.
Quality ratings and Excellence Awards for individual procedures
and diagnosis categories are named each fall in the HealthGrades
®
Healthcare Consumerism and Hospital Quality in America Report
.
The HealthGrades
®
Healthcare Consumerism and Hospital Qual-
ity in America Report
objectively identifies those hospitals with the
best overall clinical performance and across all 26 medical diagnoses
and procedures to see which hospitals have outstanding quality
across the board. These 263 top-performing hospitals represent
only 5 percent of the nation’s hospitals, and each is designated as
a HealthGrades
®
Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence.
What is evaluated?
Unlike other hospital quality studies, HealthGrades
®
evaluates
hospitals solely on clinical outcomes—risk-adjusted mortality
and in-hospital complications. HealthGrades’
®
analysis is based
on approximately 40 million Medicare discharges for the years
2008 to 2010. HealthGrades’
®
hospital ratings are independently
determined; no hospital can opt in or opt out of being rated, and
no hospital pays to be rated. Using these top-performing hospitals
as a benchmark in this year’s HealthGrades
®
study, HealthGrades
®
quantifies the impact of differences in hospital quality in terms of
lives lost and unexpected complications.
